An ice dam is something that us Mid-Westerners sometimes experience. It's a buildup of ice towards the bottom of your roof. It occurs when things start to thaw and freeze and thaw and freeze. Heat loss through the attic causes some melting...and then gets trapped towards the bottom edge of your roof where there is no melting going on. So, that trapped water sits there and can infiltrate your roof and start leaking through your ceiling or down your walls.
When that trapped water freezes and thaws, it can do damage to your shingles and roof allowing the water to get into your home at that point. You might see water streaks running down the wall on the inside or down the outside of your home. If the ice jam is big enough it can eventually create a big mess for you.
If this happens to you, give us a call. Maybe it's minor damage, maybe it's pretty major. Either way, give us a call because we can give you some quick advice over the phone. If it's a lot of damage, you'll probably want us to come out and get things cleaned up, dried up, and repaired.
Of course you'll see ice dams on older homes more often where the roof might not be vented enough or if there's a lack of insulation.
Call if you need us. We're happy to help!
