If you know where the water is coming from, shut it off at the main if you can. I know this sounds obvious, but sometimes it's hard to think straight in a high-anxiety situation.
Safety first. Never step in standing water if you aren't sure that it isn't electrified or you don't know what the chemicals or contaminates are. Example: Sewage
Call a Licensed Restoration Company! We recommend you call us here at Mustang Disaster CleanUp! Many people call their insurance company first to make sure that they have coverage. This can be a mistake, the sooner a restoration company gets there, the sooner the damage stops. In other words the longer the water sets on a wood floor, the more damage it causes. Insurance companies would rather have you call a restoration company first to stop the damage. In fact, I have been involved in some water losses where the insurance company considered not covering the loss because the home owner didn't do everything in their power to prevent further damage from happening (in other words they waited too long to do anything about the problem after they knew about it.) A restoration company can also help communicate with your insurance company to make sure you are being treated fairly.
Remove contents from basement to stop damage and to make space for the restoration company or plumber to work. Examples: Furniture, clothing, items under the staircase, etc. This step can also save you money because anything you can do yourself means that you're not paying someone else to do it.
Call your insurance company.
Steps from this point on vary depending on the type of water loss and circumstances. A great restoration company will help you get your life back in order, and they'll be beside you every step of the way until the loss is taken care of.
